Winter ebiking tips

Unless you have escaped to the tropics, you can’t miss the fact winter is definitely here. For some people that means less time on their ebikes, for hardier riders and people who commute year round by ebike, it just means a change of riding conditions.

“There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable riding clothing.” *

The colder, wetter months are also a good time to treat your bike a bit. Here are our top tips for keeping you and your ebike happy this winter.

Dress for the Weather

Proper winter riding clothing makes all the difference. Dress in layers with moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers, and waterproof, hi visibility outer layers. Wear gloves, warm socks, and on the really cold days you could even look at thermal shoe covers. A good quality, waterproof, and windproof jacket is essential.

Stay Visible

Shorter days and gloomy weather mean you need to be more visible. Dress to be seen. Clothing technology has come a long way and there are some very effective reflective and hi vis options available now. Equip your bike with lights. Most ebikes either come with lights or have the ability to have integrated lights running off the large bike battery. At a minimum, get some bright, flashing front and rear lights. Some folk add reflective tape to their bike and helmet for extra visibility.

Clean and Lube Your Chain

Chains love lube, especially in winter. Gritty, muddy water is terrible for your drivetrain, especially your chain. Regular cleaning and lubing (at least once a week) will extend its life. Use wax-based lubes for self-cleaning or thicker, longer-lasting wet lubes for bad conditions. For a deep clean, bring your bike to our workshop where we can dispose of the dirt and grease in an environmentally friendly way.

Use Your Gears Wisely

Spread the wear on your gears by using all of them, not just the hardest ones. Pedal at least 70 times a minute to avoid straining your drivetrain - you will also get more assistance from your motor with a higher pedal cadence. Take the load off your chain when shifting gears to reduce wear and prevent damage. Regularly replacing your chain (only around $50 for many ebikes) can save you from much more costly cassette or chainring replacements.

Check Your Brake Pads and Tires

Winter riding can be tough on your brake pads and tires. Wet, gritty conditions wear them out faster. Check your brake pads regularly and replace them if they’re low. Ensure your tires are in good condition and consider ones with better grip for wet or icy roads.

Keep the Water Out

A winter service ensures water can’t get into parts of your bike where it shouldn’t be. Regular servicing can prevent future issues by checking seals on bearings, batteries, and motors.

Book your bike in for a service to make sure it’s surviving the winter.
